Precise georeferencing
with less ground control points

Save your time and reach remote areas

Reach onboard a drone allows you to drastically cut the number of ground control points (GCPs) this simplifies the setup process on-site and accurately maps even remote areas.

Why camera synchronization
is so important

Usually, the autopilot triggers the camera and records the coordinate it has at that moment. When the drone is flying at 20 m/s and GPS works at 5 Hz, that means your autopilot will only have position readings every 4 m, which is not suitable for precise georeferencing. There is also always a delay between the trigger and the actual moment the photo is taken.

Reach eliminates
the delay

Reach solves the problem of positioning by connecting directly to the camera hot shoe port, which is synced with the shutter. The time and coordinates of each photo are logged with a resolution of less than a microsecond. This method allows GCPs to only be used to check your accuracy.

How to get
started?

Connect Reach to a hot shoe port on a camera
1.

Connect Reach to a hot shoe port on a camera

Every time a photo is taken the camera produces a pulse on a flash hot-shoe connector which is synced to a shutter opening.

Fly a drone, Reach will record photo events
2.

Fly a drone, Reach will record photo events

Reach captures flash sync pulses with sub-microsecond resolution and stores them in a raw data RINEX log in the internal memory.

3.

Download logs from Reach and base station

After the flight, get the RINEX logs from your airborne Reach module and a base station (Reach RS, CORS or another receiver).

Process logs and get a file with geotags of photos
4.

Process logs and get a file with geotags
of photos

Process RINEX files using free RTKLIB software. The file is created with precise coordinates of the photos and can be used for georeferencing.

Compatibility

To ensure smooth synchronization of Reach and a camera, we recommend you use the Reach M+/M2 hot shoe adapter. You can get it in the Emlid store with UAV kit or separately.

Our PPK modules are fully compatible with most cameras with hot shoe including

  • Sony A6000
  • Canon PowerShot A2300
  • Canon EOS 4000D
  • Sony NEX-5
  • Sony Alpha QX1
  • Sony Alpha A7R III
mobile platforms

Comes with
ReachView app

ReachView is easy-to-use to use software for data collection that is available for both Android and iOS. With ReachView you can control all the features of the Reach receivers, such as setting up a base station, logging RINEX data, configuring NMEA output, and monitoring data.

Camera
control

Reach can trigger cameras as well as register events. The event mark feature is a must for aerial mapping as it allows the precise time when the shutter was activated to be registered.

Simple log
management

Logs are automatically recorded directly to RINEX in the internal memory. View a list of the logs and download them using the ReachView app.

Monitoring
data

ReachView shows current satellite levels, your location on a map, and much more.

User reviews

Luke Wijnberg

CEO of 3DroneMapping

As a brief synopsis of the results, the maximum deviation of points was no more than 0.09m in all axes. This is an incredible result given the fact that the average pixel size of the resulting imagery was 0.045m.

Tuffwing

Aerial Mapping Drones

Tuffwing performed integration of Emlid Reach RTK to enable precision maps to be made without the use of GCPs. The lateral RMS error achieved is just 4cm according to the Pix4D quality report.

Event 38

Drone service company

With Reach, we produced an orthomosaic in the Drone Data Management System™ with 2.45cm horizontal and 5.08cm vertical RMSE, as compared with a survey-grade GPS on the ground.
